Introduction of Rice Straw Pellet Machine

A rice straw pellet machine is a piece of specialized equipment designed to process straw (a common agricultural byproduct) into dense, cylindrical pellets. By applying high pressure and high temperature, the machine compresses loose, bulky straw—which is otherwise difficult to store and transport—into a compact, uniform, and easy-to-handle pellet form.

This transformation goes beyond the traditional uses of straw (such as animal bedding or open-field burning) and expands its value into two high-value applications:

  • As a sustainable biomass fuel for various heating and thermal energy applications, offering an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

  • As a high-fiber nutritional supplement in animal feed, improving livestock nutrient intake.

In addition, the straw pellet machine plays a significant role in agricultural waste management. Straw is often considered a disposal problem for farmers, and open burning—a common practice—releases harmful gases into the atmosphere, negatively impacting air quality and contributing to smog. By converting this residual material into pellets, the machine helps mitigate these environmental issues, turning waste into a valuable resource while reducing harmful emissions and promoting cleaner air.

Raw Material for Rice Straw Pellet Machine

Wood raw materials: including sawdust, shavings, bark, branches, waste furniture scraps, building templates, etc. produced by processing wood such as pine, poplar, and fir. This type of raw material needs to be crushed and screened to ensure that the particle diameter is controlled at about 6 mm and the moisture content is maintained at 10%-15%.

Crop straw: corn straw, wheat straw, straw, rice husk, peanut shell, cotton stalk and other agricultural waste are also common raw materials.

Other waste: such as cloth strips and waste paper in urban garbage, sanding powder in forestry waste, as well as medicinal residues, mushroom residues, etc.

How Does The Rice Straw Pellet Machine Work?

1. Separating Rice Straw From Foreign Materials
Straw may contain far more foreign materials than sawdust, thus it is important to separate the rice straw from the foreign objects.

2. Grinding of Rice Straw
The size of the rice straw before sending it into the feeder of the rice straw pellet mill should be reduced to a uniform size of less than 5mm by a hammer mill.

3. Drying of Rice Straw
Generally speaking, rice straw is often air-dried, with a moisture content of typically 15%. So the drying of rice straw is unnecessary. However, if the moisture content of your rice straw is higher than 15%, drying with a rotary drum dryer is necessary.

4. Pelleting in Rice Straw Pellet Machine
After grinding and drying, the materials are transported into the rice straw pellet machine by conveyor. Under the pressure between the die and roller, the rice straw pellets are extruded out and cut into the desired length. The common size for rice straw fuel pellets is 6mm and 8mm.

5. Cooling of Rice Straw Pellets
In order to maintain the quality of pellets during storage and handling, the extruded pellets with high temperatures should be air quenched down to room temperature or a little higher by the counter flow pellets cooling machine.

Advantages of Rice Straw Pellets As A Renewable Energy Source

Increased bulk density: The densification process increases the bulk density from about 80-150 kg/m³ to 600-700 kg/m³, which reduces transportation costs and storage volume.

Lower moisture content: The moisture content of the pellets is usually less than 10%, which is beneficial for long-term storage and reduces product losses.

Higher energy efficiency: The pellets have a more uniform composition, resulting in higher energy efficiency and lower emissions when burned, which is more advantageous than raw rice straw.

Whole Production Line

A complete biomass pellet  production line includes crushing, drying, pelletizing, and packaging units.

  1. Crushing: Wood blocks, wood chips, or other wood materials are uniformly crushed. This can be done using a wood crusher or shredder to reduce the size of the wood into smaller pieces.
  2. Drying: The crushed wood material is then fed into a drying machine drum through a conveyor belt. The drying process quickly reduces the moisture content of the material to around 12% to 15%. This is important for ensuring the quality of the final wood pellets.
  3. Pelletizing: Once the wood material is dried, it is then fed into a pellet mill. The pellet mill compresses the material under high pressure and heat, forming it into small cylindrical pellets. The pellets are then extruded from the pellet mill.
  4. Packaging: The pellets are discharged from the pellet mill and can be directly connected to a conveyor belt that leads to an automatic packaging machine. The packaging machine packages the pellets into bags

ZZCHRYSO Rice Straw Pellet Machine – FAQ

A: Open burning releases huge amounts of smoke, PM2.5, CO₂, and nitrogen oxides, which harm air quality and public health. A ZZCHRYSO rice straw pellet machine turns that waste into clean fuel. The pellets burn more completely, produce almost no smoke, and have much lower emissions. You stop polluting and start producing valuable energy.

A: Raw rice straw has very low bulk density (80–150 kg/m³), making it expensive to transport and store. Pellets increase density to 600–700 kg/m³ – that’s 4‑6 times denser. They also have lower moisture content (below 10%), which prevents mold and improves combustion. The calorific value is 3500–4200 kcal/kg, and pellets burn more uniformly with less ash and no coking.

A: First, remove foreign materials (stones, metal, soil). Then use a hammer mill to grind the straw to a uniform size smaller than 5 mm. Check moisture content – rice straw is often air‑dried to around 15%. If it’s above 15%, you’ll need a rotary drum dryer. Proper preparation ensures the ZZCHRYSO pellet mill runs smoothly and produces high‑quality pellets.

A: Common diameters are 6 mm and 8 mm. After the pellets are extruded from the ZZCHRYSO pellet machine, a cutter automatically slices them to the desired length. The size can be adjusted by changing the die holes and cutter settings.

A: Yes. Fresh pellets exit at high temperature (about 70–90°C). If bagged hot, they can sweat, soften, and break apart. A counter‑flow pellet cooling machine cools them to room temperature or slightly above, which hardens the pellets and makes them stable for storage and transport. ZZCHRYSO offers matching cooling equipment.

A: For every 4 tons of rice grain, about 6 tons of rice straw are produced. With a ZZCHRYSO pellet mill, roughly 5–5.5 tons of pellets can be made from 6 tons of straw, depending on moisture content. That’s a significant amount of renewable fuel from what would otherwise be waste.

A: Household heating stoves, biomass boilers, industrial steam boilers, and even power plants to replace coal. The pellets burn cleanly, produce steady heat, and are much cheaper than fossil fuels. Many ZZCHRYSO customers supply pellets to bakeries, food processing plants, and district heating systems.

A: Yes. Rice straw is very cheap or even free. After processing, the pellet price gives a profit margin of 20–30% in many markets. The ZZCHRYSO pellet mill also helps you qualify for renewable energy subsidies or carbon credits. You turn an agricultural waste stream into a steady income.

A: Furniture manufacturing (tables, cabinets, wardrobes), door and flooring production (interior/exterior doors, laminate flooring), architectural panels (wall cladding, ceiling tiles), and WPC products (decking, fencing, outdoor furniture).

A: Regular cleaning of rollers (remove resin buildup), checking the engraved roller for wear, lubricating bearings and drive chains, and inspecting the heating system. The rubber pressure roller should be replaced when it shows wear. We provide a full manual and remote support.
